Here at the Riviera Guesthouse in Whitby, we always look forward to the Summer!
Summer can be one of the busiest times of year for our family-run business, yet there’s also lots to do, see and visit during June, July and August.

Whitby is just one of the coastal resorts that dot the Yorkshire Coast, and each town has its own entertainment calendar.
June is the month which includes Father’s Day, the Summer Solstice and hopefully lots of sunshine during the long hours of daylight.
This is the month that features the Robin Hood’s Bay Folk Weekend (6th to 8th) which takes place in this lovely fishing village , the Whitby 60s Spectacular (same dates, taking place at the Whitby Pavilion) and the Filey Food Festival (7th and 8th June) taking place in the resort of the same name.
In Scarborough, June is the month the Open Air Theatre opens for business and this year’s line-up is fantastic!

Acts for Summer 2025 include Orbital, Faithless, Pendulum, Texas, Will Smith, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Corrs and more.
July is packed with brilliant things to do here in Whitby.
Whitby Pavilion is just a hop, skip and a jump away from the Riviera so you don’t have far to go to get to your favourite event.

Local attractions the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the country’s best preserved heritage railways, stopping at stations throughout the North York Moor National Park.
Steam trains run daily during the high season (subject to fire restrictions) and some will call into Whitby Railway Station too.

Whitby Museum
A treasure trove of artefacts, Whitby Museum is crammed with history, heritage and fascinating facts.

Find out about Captain James Cook, one of the world’s best known explorers.
Be awe-inspired by some incredible ship models.
Then take a look at the special exhibition, which this year is Whitby Lasses (until 15th June).
Next to the museum you’ll find Pannett Art Gallery and Pannett Gardens.
The gallery includes some fine examples of the Staithes Artists work.
If you want the kids to run off that endless energy they all seem to have, then Pannett Park Play Area is amazing.
It is full of swings, slides, climbing frames and more, all decorated in colourful shades, and its free to use!
Pannett Park itself is so worth a visit with its rare trees, Jurassic Garden, Lily Pond and much more.
The Jurassic Garden is a must for fossil fans and diehard dinosaur enthusiasts.
It features a special path through special rocks, sculptures, special trees and more.
Royal National Lifeboat Museum, Whitby
Featuring a full size lifeboat, this inspiring museum is free to enter (donations welcome).
There are incredible stories of brave rescues including that of the Rohilla, one of the most famous shipwrecks along the Yorkshire Coast.
North York Moors National Park
The North York Moors National Park is spread over 554 square miles and includes some of the most stunning landscapes in England.
Famous walks include The Lyke Wake Walk, countless smaller footpaths and the Hole of Horcum.
Villages include Staithes, Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay (part of The Heritage Coast); Goathland, Grosmont and Egton Bridge and more.
Guests can also explore the Land of Iron which include nearby Sleights and Ruswarp, featuring element of a rich ironstone mining heritage.
The National Park always features a myriad of events from February onwards.
During July and August events include Family Felt Workshops, Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Dr Doolittle Outdoor Theatre, Super Stampers Trail and more.
August Events
So, August is when the season is in full swing and the Whitby Regatta takes some beating.
This year’s dates are 9th, 10th and 11th August.
Packed full of fun events, boat races, classic cars, falconry, a star party, fun fair and the famous firework display to conclude the event.

The Blue Plaque Trail features famous people with connections to Whitby including Bram Stocker (author of Dracula), Elizabeth Gaskell (who penned an early biography of Charlotte Bronte, author of Jane Eyre), Dora Walk (one of the first female fishing boat skippers), Elizabeth Botham (who founded Whitby’s Bothams bakery) and William Scoresby Snr (explorer) and Frank Meadow Sutcliffe (photographer).
