Riviera Guesthouse and Long Distance Walking Trails

Here at the Riviera Guesthouse, we have many lovely walks on the doorstep.

And with the King Charles III England Coast Path now officially open, there’s never been a better time to dig out the walking attire!

Cleveland way

Our ‘part’ of this 2,700 miles long distance route is in the North East and East Coast.

It stretches from Berwick Upon Tweed to the Humber.

Book your stay with and enjoy a wonderful stay and a breakfast of champions to start your day.

Shorter Walks

We’ve written some informative blogs about these including our 20 best walks and our pedestrian’s guide

Two stunning long-distance walks, which you can reach easily from the Riviera, are the Cinder Track and the Cleveland Way National Trail.

The Cleveland Way also forms part of England Coast Path.

The Cinder Track

Cinder track

The Whitby beginning/end of the Cinder track is a five-minute walk from us.

The track, which follows the former railway line route from Whitby to Scarborough, which closed in 1965, is suitable for walkers, runners and cyclists.

With a mileage of 21.7 miles from Whitby to Scarborough, it is a stunning walk taking rambler through some of the most beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

The official start is in Scarborough, however some rules are meant to be broken!

To find the Whitby ‘start’, then you need to head to Stakesby Vale, which is near Southend Gardens (not far from Pannett Park).

Ascending the steep steps (there are handrails) you find yourself in a quiet and peaceful world which once featured a railway line.

As you head towards Scarborough, along the route you will walk beneath several bridges, over the Larpool viaduct, Larpool Woods before heading towards the village of Hawsker.

Robin Hoods Bay

Heading towards the cost (from which you will see sections of the Cleveland Way) you will see stunning woodland and pastures before reaching Robin Hood’s Bay.

See our blog here about this popular seaside fishing village which captures the imagination.

The route takes you inland towards Fylinghall and then onto Ravenscar, which includes fantastic views.

It then follows a more or less straight line to the Hayburn Wyke and Cloughton Woods.

However, it is worth saying that if you head away from the track, then you encounter some serious steep and rocky footpaths.

Always be sure to wear the correct footwear and safety items with you.

A section of the Cinder Tract at this point are also in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

As you follow the track southward, you start to see Scarborough Castle headland in the distance (if the weather is in your favour!).

You then travel through the pretty villages of Cloughton and Burniston, where you will traverse through residential streets.

Then the track heads towards Scalby and then Scarborough, before curtailing close to Sainsbury’s supermarket.

There are way markers along the route.

As Cinder Track is a linear walk, you should allow enough time to complete it.

Remember you need to get back to your accommodation at the end of your walk, cycle or run.

The Cleveland Way National Trail

Runswick

This stunning National Trail is 109-miles in total, starting in Helmsley and ending in Filey.

The stretch between Whitby and Scarborough is just wonderful with views that would rival any coastal stretch in the UK.

You can complete the Saltburn to Sandsend section (17.5 miles) which takes in Skinningrove, Boulby Cliff, Staithes, Runswick Bay then Sandsend.

In Whitby, it begins at Whitby Abbey and hugs the coast all the way to Scarborough.

You will pass Saltwick Bay, and head southwards towards Ness Point, Robins Hood’s Bay, Boggle Hole and Ravenscar.

The section from Robin Hoods Bay to Scarborough is 12 miles.

Continue along the route towards Hayburn Wyke Nature Reserve and Cloughton.

The sea should be on your left for the majority of the route.

You will see Scarborough come into view a good few miles along the trail with the Castle Headland being a prominent landmark.

As you descend toward Scarborough, you will see the Sea Life Centre in the North Bay.

You can follow the Cleveland Way around the Marine Drive, into South Bay and then onto Filey.

The Cleveland Way is known for its very steep inclines and descents so a good level of fitness is required.

Always ensure you wear the right footwear, clothing and have the correct safety equipment with you.

Check out buses for this linear walk.

For some of the stretches, the Cinder Track and the Cleveland Way run parallel to each other, with the Cinder Track being further inland.

Coast to Coast Walk in England

Coast to coast

This iconic long distance walk takes participants from St Bees near the Cumbrian Coast ‘cross country’ towards Robin Hoods’ Bay.

Find out more here.

You can either visit the point where the Coast to Coast enters Robin Hood’s Bay, or be most elated that you’ve nearly reached the finishing point if you’ve walked the full distance

The route enters Robin Hood’s Bay from the east, from the cliff top above Dungeon Hole where it meets the Cinder Track.

There is a small cul-de-sac leading to the main road into Robin Hood’s Bay itself.

Safety When Walking

The main thing to remember is your safety and this includes having the right clothing, headwear and footwear.

You must have with you sufficient food and drink; you also need access to good and up to date maps, a fully charged phone and a torch.

It is always a good idea to let someone know your plans, when you intend to set off and your anticipated completion of the walk.

Due to the idyllic locations of both routes, there are areas where there is little or no mobile phone signal.

Also, due to the changing environment and challenging conditions, walkers need to be aware of tides, any landslips and diversions.
