Summer Events in Whitby in 2024

As Summer approaches, the long summer school holidays are coming up fast!

While a break for the school routine is welcome, the six-week break is a long time to entertain the family.

Whitby is a busy place all year round, yet the Summer is the time scores of events take place throughout the town.

Lots To Do in Whitby

As well as free things to do such as building a sandcastle on the beach, walking along the Cleveland Way, or visiting the various play parks in the town, there is a packed schedule of things to do this July and August.

July 2024 Events

5th to 7th : Whitby Northern Soul Weekender, now in its 22nd year, is the annual event that attracts the crowds and is touted as the fastest selling Northern Soul Weekender in the UK.

The DJ lineup includes  Kev Roberts, Ginger Taylor, Soul Sam, Hitsville Chalky, Mick Taylor, Yocki, Snowy, Ozz Osborne, Ray Copley, Steve Woomble, Chris Box, Sam Evans, Phil Kingswood, Derek Mead, John Barker, Steve Luigi, Paul Lightly, Rob Smith, Julie & John  and many guest spinners.

Venue is the Whitby Pavilion, tickets available subject to availability. 

19th: Mark Summers as Elvis Presley at the Whitby Pavilion. Perfect for fans of ‘The King’.

20th: Oh, What a Night! Features songs from the West Ends ‘Jersey Boys’. Takes place at the Whitby Pavilion.

20th & 21st: The Great Seaside Vintage Fair … a perennial favourite in Whitby each summer, hosted by the Whitby Pavilion.

25th to 28th: Whitby Beer Festival at Whitby Mission & Seafarers Centre, Haggersgate. This event is held in aid of Whitby & District Lion’s Club. This year it celebrates its 13th year and is serving over 30 artisan ales, boutique beers and scrumptious ciders.

Opening times are 12noon to 10pm Thursday to Saturday and 12noon to 4pm on Sunday. Entrance tickets are just £5. Find out more here: 

26th to 28th:  Whitby Steampunk Weekend XVI including an evening with Tenpole Tudor.

This famous event is a spectacular event and you can all about last year’s event here.

29th: Magic Mike’s Summer Show great for all the family at the Whitby Pavilion.

His show also takes place in August on  5th and 12th.

August 2024 Events

2nd to 4th: Whitby Traction Rally held at Whitby Abbey, Hawsker Lane, Whitby.

A spectacular traction engine rally, new for 2024, there will be the Little Nipper Lurcher and Terrier Show, along with Ridgeside Falconry.

The event includes The Scarborough Fair Collection with fairground organs, traction engines, vintage cars, classic motorcycles, military vehicles, and lots, lots more.

There will also be trade stands, working displays, funfair rides, live music and a firework display on the Saturday evening.

Summer wouldn’t be Summer without an agricultural show!

On August 9th, the Hinderwell Horse and Agricultural Show takes place.

This show is renowned for its Cleveland Bay classes, a breed of horse favoured by the late Queen for pulling her carriages.

Equestrian classes include heavy horses, pony breeding, ridden ponies, show jumping and gymkhana.

Other classes include farm produce, handicrafts and more … alpacas and owls will also be on show.

August 16th to 18th : Staithes Lifeboat Weekend, as a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike.

The lifeboat weekend is packed with things to do.

The fiercely contested race from the Lifeboat Slipway takes place on Saturday afternoon featuring an array of homemade rafts.

17th, 18th and 19th: Whitby Regatta.

As one of the busiest events of the year, visitors flock to the town for this three-day spectacular.

From sailing to lifeboat launches, from Scrufts Dog Show to a Fun Fair and lots more, this event is one the busiest of the year.

It culminates in the spectacular fireworks display on Monday 19th August at 9.45pm, which can be viewed from the West Cliff and West Pier.

17th to 23rd: Whitby Folk Week, taking place throughout the town, is a week-long celebration of folk music.

The event celebrates British traditional song, dance, music and storytelling.

21st: Egton Horse and Agricultural Show

30th: Whitby Pirate Festival at Whitby Harbour and Bandstand … an event that is crammed with pirates, parrots, stalls, displays, live music and food!

31st: Thank Abba for the Music at Whitby Pavilion, a tribute to this timeless, globally famous group.

There are other events taking place too such as the Laughing Lobster Comedy Club on 12th July at the Coliseum Centre, Victoria Place.
