EVER WONDERED WHERE WHITBY JET COMES FROM?
Our lovely town is famous for its association with the precious black gemstone, known as Whitby jet.

Beautiful and distinctive, we love seeing jet jewellery in Whitby’s shops, but then we started to wonder where it came from …

Did you know that jet is actually fossilised wood, created from the Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria tree, for lovers of Latin)?

OUR BEAUTIFUL TOWN HAS A BUZZ ABOUT IT! COULD IT BE THAT SPRING IS ON ITS WAY?
That we’ve had some beautiful winter sunshine?

Maybe … yet we think it’s because the much-anticipated inaugural Steampunk Weekend is nearly here.

If you are wondering what Steampunk means (but were afraid to ask), we’ve gone all Sherlock Holmes and investigated this fascinating genre that includes fashion, lifestyle, art and music.
RENOVATION SEASON REVEALS MORE HISTORY OF OUR BUILDING
Zed ‘dusted off’ (ironically!) and donned his ‘rubble’ gear again to begin our annual renovations here at the Riviera Guesthouse.

This month, it’s the turn of two single rooms to undergo their transformation – and then we found some fascinating ‘treasure’ underneath the floorboards!

With our Guesthouse being a Victorian building, we’re forever unveiling quirky items while we’re renovating, revealing a little more of the Riviera’s interesting history.

This time, we found a collection of items belonging to a Lieutenant Bewley and Lieutenant Hogg dating from during World War Two (around 1942) to 1969.

Among the finds, there was a laundry order slip from 2nd November 1942 where Lt. Bewley had: “1 Shirt, 3 Gent’s Pants, 1 Bath Towel, 1 Collar and 2 Handkerchiefs laundered at a price of 14.5p” in total. No doubt it would be more expensive these days!
SPECIAL WINTER OFFER AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2017
Beat the post festive blues with a stay by the Yorkshire Coast.

Snuggling up in the warmth of our sea facing rooms and watching the crashing waves outside is enough to make winter fun and exciting for even the shyest of winter weathers.
REVAMP OF OUR ENTRANCE AREA
At Riviera Guesthouse, we understand that first impressions do count therefore we have put our heads together this month to come up with a few ideas to give our guest’s impressions on entering our building a little bit more attention.

We have painted the entrance pillars from a magnolia to a jet black which we feel frames the entrance to the building.

We have also painted the rails outside the building in the similar jet back paint with the detailing painted in silver.

We have changed the UPVC door to a wooden composite door.

JEREMY CLARKSON, RICHARD HAMMOND AND JAMES MAY VISIT WHITBY !
Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May were in Whitby this month filming their new Amazon Prime series The Grand Tour.

This brought Jimmy Carr to Whitby and he was seen whizzing around on a Jetski in the mouth of Whitby Harbour.

Carr's performance in Whitby harbour was straight out of a James Bond film, culminating in a dramatic crash into the side of a boat – although the comedian was replaced by a stunt-double for the actual impact.
THE BEST SUMMER SINCE OUR FAMILY TOOK OVER IN 2007
This is thanks to all our guests, new and returning.

It’s also thanks to the great British weather this year giving us some long-awaited sunshine.

It would appear that Yorkshire stands on the brink of a new golden age of tourism

WE ARE EXCITED TO SHARE A WRITE-UP IN THE JERSEY EVENING POST (JEP) FEATURING THE RIVIERA!
Tom Ogg, a journalist from the JEP came to do a travel feature about Whitby and has subsequently included a fabulous review of his stay with us at Riviera Guesthouse.
